How to Install a Pedestal Sink

Pedestal sinks are ideal for those who are looking for some extra space in their small bathrooms or half baths. They are also known as ‘ped lavs’ or lavatories and take up very little floor and wall space, compared to traditional vanities and countertop sinks. They enhance the look of a bathroom’s decor by giving it a stylish, attractive, and sophisticated look. It is also a good choice if the storage space under the vanity sink is not required.

Bathroom sinks have two parts―a basin and a pedestal, and are also available in various styles. They either made of enameled cast iron or vitreous china. The former is known to be less expensive and more durable than the latter. However, sinks made of vitreous china are popular and offer a wide variety of styles, too. They also differ in their hole configurations that correspond to the faucets that are to be installed.

Instructions

Before you start installing the sink, you will need to remove the old sink, turn off the water supply, and also remove all the old fixtures. Make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials ready. Wear safety glasses and have a bowl or pail handy, to be used in case there is a leakage. The entire installation process may take around three to four hours.

• Step 1: Place the pedestal sink and base in the desired position and measure and mark the mounting hole points on the floor and wall.


• Step 2: Drill holes on the marked points with the masonry bit, if you’re drilling the tiles. Anchor the mounting bracket into the floor and the wall with screws, and make sure it is anchored on an even level.


• Step 3: Once the bracket has been mounted, the drain assembly and the faucet have to be installed. Connect two flexible tubes to the faucet, secure them with wrenches to the faucet fittings, and mount the faucet to the sink using the plumber’s putty.


• Step 4: Mount the sink on its bracket against the wall, using lag screws, and connect the drain assembly to it.


• Step 5: Once this is done, fix the pedestal to the floor using bolts, making sure that you do not tighten them too much. Connect the supply lines, install the pedestal, and turn on the water supply. In case of a leakage, make the necessary amendments and the pedestal sink will be ready for use.
